Reading at St Gabriel's
In Reception and Year 1, the focus of our teaching of reading is through phonics. At St Gabriel's we use the Essential Letters and Sounds scheme. For further information on phonics, please refer to 'Literacy' in the 'Subjects' area.
Guided reading is taught consistently from Year Two through to Year Six. A timetable of scaffolded tasks allows children to be appropriately challenged. Children learn about reading for meaning, retrieval, comprehension, inference, deduction and fluency through these sessions as well as broadening their knowledge through the content of the high quality texts that are being used to enhance the quality of these lessons.
Children also have opportunities to read frequently during whole class Literacy lessons and across the curriculum, with many of our texts being linked to units of work in other subjects. These texts are high quality books that celebrate cultural capital and are inclusive of those from other cultures and ethnicities, reflecting the realities of our children as well as experiences and perspectives that are different to their own.
