PE
At St Gabriel’s we intend that children leave St Gabriel’s with the knowledge and breadth of study that allows for self-identity and a sound knowledge of the world around them whilst developing the skills to apply this knowledge to build upon the opportunities and experiences they will face as they progress to their next stage in learning and beyond to employment. It is our intention that our pupils not only excel academically, but socially, emotionally and spiritually, providing them with the foundations and building blocks for their future.
Our aims are to provide a curriculum that celebrates and reflects the diversity of our pupils. Across each key stage teachers will explore important people and events in history. The Curriculum will provide opportunities, within the theme, that will focus on under-represented groups in society; for example people of global majority heritage and women in STEM
Intent In Physical Education, our pupils are encouraged to be healthy, active children with the view to being lifelong, active citizens, developing an active lifestyle that contribute to both their mental and physical well-being. Additionally, we want PE to encourage interest in sports and competition, which can enrich their lives and be taken into adulthood. All PE lessons are designed to teach and learn new skills and to use these as building blocks to learn new games and sports. All lessons are fully inclusive and healthy competition is also encouraged. Our goal is to increase the amount of time our pupils are active every day. Our school intends to fully take advantage of the PE premium by investing in CPD for all teachers, updating and adding to a wide selection of equipment and provide challenging and fun experiences that inspire our pupils and promote healthy lifestyles for optimum wellbeing. |
Implementation To ensure we are providing a diverse and effective Curriculum, classes are timetabled to take part in 2 hours of PE per week. Throughout the day, extra opportunities for physical movement is provided such as; The Daily Mile and morning and afterschool extra-curricular clubs. At St Gabriel’s we ensure our pupils are given regular opportunities to learn and master life skills to become responsible and well-rounded adults. For example; by the end of Key Stage 2 all pupils will have engaged in developing their swimming and water safety skills and taken part in a Safer Cycling course. Because our school values underpin our delivery in PE, we ensure lessons develop social and cognitive skills as well as cooperation, collaboration and gaining confidence in achieving well. We aim to participate in a range of inter and intra events run throughout the school year, giving children opportunities to take part in competitive and non-competitive sports. Many opportunities to strengthen links within the local community are made throughout the year. Our school work closely with various clubs such as Chelsea Foot Club, Lord’s and Middlesex Cricket. This enables our staff to not only deepen subject knowledge about a range of sports but build on and improve their own delivery to ensure good progress across the National Curriculum for PE. Developing communication and leadership skills enforces the mutual respect we insist upon at St Gabriel’s and can be applied across all their school experiences. These are important intentions of our PE lessons. Additionally, we want the children to understand the significance of healthy practices which contribute to their physical and mental health. To achieve this, groups of Y5 pupils are trained up to build as playground leaders to initiate and lead games with their peers. |
Impact Children of St Gabriel’s have a secure understanding of the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle. They progress well throughout each year group ensuring learners are ready for the next stage in their physical education. All pupils are eager to attend clubs and competitive sports events, including children who are less active. When taking part in Inter School competitions, our pupils consistently demonstrate our school values. Pupil’s skills and knowledge are monitored across the year, allowing gaps and misconceptions to be identified and addressed during the lessons. Pupil progress is monitored throughout the year, allowing children to succeed at every stage in their physical development. |
